How to check the quality of reagents?
Check the Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a mandatory document for any chemical. It contains:
- Product composition (including impurities)
Physical and chemical properties
Storage and transportation conditions
First aid and disposal measures
✅ What to look for:
Availability of SDS in Russian
Compliance with GOST 30333-2012 (equivalent to GOST R ISO 11014-2009)
Date of compilation and batch number
⚠️ The absence of an SDS is a serious red flag. Such a product may be unsafe or illegal.
2. Request a quality certificate
A quality certificate confirms that the reagent complies with technical specifications (TU) or GOST standards. It specifies:
Performance indicators (e.g., degree of corrosion inhibition)
Appearance, density, pH
Test results for key parameters

3. Conduct laboratory tests
The best way to check is to conduct tests in an independent or in-house laboratory. Typical tests:
Corrosion inhibitors: tests according to GOST 9.514-2019 (corrosion rate in a model environment)
Demulsifiers: emulsion breakdown test (break test) at different temperatures
Flocculants/coagulants: determination of the degree of water purification by suspended solids and petroleum products
Tip: Conduct comparative tests with the previous reagent to see the difference in effectiveness.
4. Evaluate the packaging and labeling
A high-quality product is always properly packaged:
Clear labeling: name, article number, GOST/TU, expiration date, hazard class
Integrity of the container (no leaks or damage)
Presence of an individual batch number

5. Check documents for compliance with regulations
Ensure that the reagent:
Is registered in the TR TS 041/2017 system (“On the safety of chemical products”)
Has a conclusion from Rospotrebnadzor (if necessary)
Has passed an environmental assessment (for facilities with strict control)

6. Conduct a pilot delivery
Do not switch to a new reagent immediately on a large scale. Start with a trial batch:
Check it in real conditions
Evaluate its effectiveness, compatibility, and consumption
Compare it with the previous product

7. Evaluate supplier support
Quality is not only about the product, but also about service:
Is the supplier ready to provide technical data?
Do they have a full-time technologist who can help with selection and implementation?
Do they offer staff training?
